A THREE-minute train journey with a £2.80 fare ended up costing a Darlington woman more than £400 in court.

Magistrates heard on Thursday, January 13, that Denise Dalkin failed to produce a ticket for the short journey between Darlington North Road train station and the town's main station at Bank Top on April 2, 2021.

The fare would have cost just £2.80 and the court was told that there were fully-functioning ticket purchasing facilities available at North Road station.

However, Dalkin failed to provide a valid ticket when asked by a train conductor and later failed to pay a £20 fixed penalty notice or communicate with the rail firm to pay what she owed.

The case was sent to court and Dalkin, of Pounteys Close, Middleton St George, pleaded not guilty on October 19, 2021 to failing to produce a rail ticket on request.

But the case was proved in her absence on Thursday by South Yorkshire Magistrates sitting at Doncaster Justice Centre North.

Dalkin was fined £220, ordered to pay £2.80 compensation, plust court costs and charges which brought the total she has to pay up to £406.80.
