Northumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner has called on Prime Minister Boris Johnson to resign.

This comes after he admitted attending a ‘BYOB’ drinks party in the Downing Street garden in the middle of lockdown on May 20, 2020.

Kim McGuinness, said that this time the PM has gone too far.

She said: “Enough is enough. I believe he has no choice but to resign. Laws were in place, officers worked tirelessly policing them, and people were punished with fines for breaking them.

“A wealth of personal sacrifices were being made by families up and down the country including so many here in the North East, meanwhile those in charge partied on.”

On Wednesday, Boris Johnson said he “apologised” for the party, although he claimed “it could have been said technically to fall within the guidance”.

At the time people were only allowed to socialise with one person outside their household, in public outdoor places.

On Thursday night, further allegations emerged about Downing Street parties, in April 2021, when the Prime Minister was not present.

Ms McGuinness added: “You cannot have one rule for those at Westminster and one for the rest of us. The rest of us are sick of it. The people have spoken on this – even his supporters have been pushed a step too far. He needs to be put in his place once and for all and his place should no longer be at number 10.”
