AN elderly woman had to be rescued from a house fire which started after she fell whilst cooking.

The woman had fallen to the floor in the kitchen of her home in Newstead Avenue, Stockton, at lunchtime on Friday.

Emergency services were called to reports of a person trapped in a house fire and discovered the incident happened after the woman had an accident whilst a pan was alight on the hob.

Cleveland Fire Brigade sent three appliances from Stockton and Thornaby stations to the scene at 1pm and had dealt with the blaze within an hour.

Firefighters used specialist breathing apparatus, a hose reel jet and positive pressure ventilation to deal with the fire and smoke.

They were able to help the woman to safety and administered first aid at the scene.

The brigade subsequently gave the woman fire survival guidance to help keep her safe in future.
