An ASDA worker from County Durham has been recognised in a national capacity after she went above and beyond for a customer in distress earlier this week.

Mindy, who works in the Bishop Auckland store, was having a routine day when she was approached by a woman who needed help.

The customer, who had just done a full shop, had gone back to her car but accidently locked the keys in the vehicle – leaving herself stranded and needing to get home to look after her teenage children.

After looking for options of how to help the shopper, Mindy tried to open the car, but to no avail. That’s when her kind nature and community spirit kicked in.

Instead of leaving the shopper isolated and on her own, Mindy pulled out all of the stops to drive the woman back home, a 15-minute drive from the supermarket, and retrieve some spare keys.

Now that Mindy came to the rescue of the unknown shopper, she has been praised by her colleagues and customer trading manager, Wendy, who has nominated the shop worker for a customer service award.

Wendy said: "The lady Mindy helped had done a full shop and, after closing her car boot, realised she had locked her keys inside.

“The customer was very stressed as she needed to get home for her teenage kids." Mindy went out to the car herself to see if she could get in but, when she realised, she couldn't, decided to drive her to her home 15 minutes away in her own car.

"The lady got the spare car key, then she and her kids were driven back to our store by Mindy to retrieve the car and obviously the keys. The customer was so grateful for Mindy's help and said how thankful she was that Mindy was there that day.

“We are so proud of Mindy and the way she dealt with the situation. She's a very calm, cool character who loves to solve problems. Well done, Mindy, you really went above and beyond."

Despite the praise within the Bishop Auckland store, Mindy has also garnered supporter across England, too.

After Asda posted the good deed online yesterday (January 6), hundreds of people took the opportunity to praise the County Durham woman’s actions, calling her an “example staff member” and “the sweetest person”.

One commentor on the post about Mindy said: “Yes, well done, I find all the staff in Bishop Asda very pleasant and helpful,” while another said: “Well done Mindy, you saved the day for that worried customer.”
