CURRYS has confirmed the reason behind a store closure on Teesside after reports that it was undergoing a deep clean due to Covid.

The huge retailer had closed its doors at the Teesside Park megastore on Tuesday morning with QR codes advising customers find an alternative location.

At the time, it was not known how the long the store would close but rumours suggested it had closed for a deep clean.

Now, the retailer has confirmed the store is back open but that a number of staff members had tested positive for Covid.

A Currys spokesperson said: “There is no greater concern for us than the safety and wellbeing of our colleagues and customers.

"We’ve closely followed the Government’s ‘working safely during coronavirus’ guidance throughout the pandemic, and have put extensive hygiene measures in place to make our sites Covid-secure.

“Unfortunately, we can confirm that a number of colleagues in our Teesside store did in fact test positive for Covid-19 yesterday. Thankfully they are doing well.

"As soon as we were made aware, we worked quickly to instigate our internal track and trace process, and closed the store for a deep clean.

"The store is open and operating as usual. We will continue to be vigilant and support our colleagues.”

The store was reopened at around 2.30pm on the same day, while Currys' other stores in Middlesbrough and Hartlepool were unaffected.
