FOUR men have been arrested following disorder at a match between Spennymoor Town Football Club and Darlington Football Club on Boxing Day.

Two men supporting Darlington, aged 41 and 29, and two teenage boys, who were supporting Spennymoor, have been arrested following the incident which saw several people assaulted and damage caused to property.

The teenagers and 29-year-old were all arrested on suspicion of affray while the 41-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assault and assault on an emergency worker.

The arrests come as the teams meet again today for their next match in Darlington at 3pm and Darlington Football Club has banned all four from attending today’s game.

Officers have been working with both clubs to ensure extra measures are put in place ahead of today’s fixture at Blackwell Meadows, which will see fans segregated.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: “The disturbance on Boxing Day was unacceptable and officers have been working closely with both clubs to identify suspects and make arrests.

“We hope all fans enjoy the match at Blackwell Meadows today. The club will be overseeing the security and safety of spectators but officers will be in the area to ensure fans are able to safely enjoy the game without a small minority of people spoiling it for them.”
