ONE man has been arrested after a "serious" crash that saw a Teesside woman hit by van near a Yarm school.

Roads were closed this morning following the incident which reportedly happened between Leven Road and the B1265 Worsall Road.

Emergency services attended the scene soon after and police say a 61-year-old driver was arrested and the 62-year-old woman was taken to hospital.

The collision was reported at 6.45am this morning involving a female pedestrian in her 60s and a white Peugot van on The Spital in Yarm.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said: "Police attended a road traffic collision reported at 6.46am this morning (December 30) involving a female pedestrian in her 60s and a white Peugeot van on The Spital in Yarm.

"The female pedestrian, aged 62, has suffered serious injuries and is receiving hospital treatment.

"The 61-year-old driver of the van has been arrested in connection with the incident and police continue to carry out enquiries.

"Police closed the road from the roundabout at the end of Yarm High Street to Leven Road for a number of hours but the road is now open again.

"Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, and hasn’t already spoken to police to call 101, reference 220772.

"This includes anyone with dashcam or CCTV which may assist officers. Officers not only want to see footage from The Spital at time of the incident but also from the time surrounding the incident, from the area of the Shell Petrol Station on Thirsk Road (where the A67 joins Thirsk Road), up to The Spital where the collision occurred."
