MORE than a thousand homes and businesses are currently without power.

Northern Powergrid said its teams are working hard to restore power to those properties affected by unexpected cuts as quickly as possible.

The electricity distribution network operator for the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire, has not said if the weather is to blame for the faults but the Met Office had issued a yellow weather warning for parts of the region today, which warned some areas could experience disruption to utilities and services.

More than 600 properties in the Consett area are experiencing a power cut – 540 in the Shotley Bridge area should have electricity by 3.30pm and the power should be back on an hour earlier for 40 properties off nearby Pont Lane.

In Peterlee, 190 properties have been without electricity since just after 9.30am and are likely to have to wait until about 6pm for service to be restored.

The power to 220 homes in the Bournmoor area, near Houghton-le-Spring, went off at about 10am and is expected to be restored at about 1.45pm.

About 130 properties in South Hetton lost power before breakfast this morning and are expected to have it restored by 2pm.

And 80 properties in Baldersdale, Teesdale, lost power at about 11am but should have it back on by 2.15pm, according to the latest information.

On Tyneside, 110 properties in Whickham, near Gateshead, and 30 at Crawcrook should have power back on early this afternoon.
