PARTS of the region have woken up to snow again this Boxing Day - which has brought with it hazardous driving conditions to many roads including the A66 which is partly closed this morning.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for part of the North East and Yorkshire, particularly central and western parts of the region, which lasts until noon.

It warns snow and strong winds are expected, leading to possible disruption, mainly to travel over higher ground.

A spokesperson said: "Some roads and railways likely to be affected by snow or ice, leading to longer journey times by car, as well as by bus and possibly train services.

"Some short term loss of power and other services is possible."

Council gritters have been treating roads overnight and are back out again this morning and motorists are urged to take care and be aware of icy conditions.

And drivers should plan their journey in advance, to check there are no road closures.

The A66 both ways from the A1(M) Junction 53 at Scotch Corner to the A685 at Brough, is currently shut in both directions due to snow.

National Highways North East warned snow is expected to continue until late morning and could not say when the route was likely to reopen.
