MORE than 300 pupils at a North East school have used Christmas jumpers and Santa hats to raise money for Save the Children.

Polam Hall School, in Darlington, held a variety of special Christmas events within its junior school, including a Santa Dash around the school grounds, a Christmas jumper day, a Christmas-themed quiz, and a ‘Spot Santa’ competition.

Children from Reception to Year 6 took part in the Santa Dash alongside their classmates, seeing how many times they could circle the school playing fields, while on the lookout for paper Santas which had been hidden around the grounds.

Louise Blair, junior school P.E lead, said: “At this time of the year, we always try to do something with the children to boost their wellbeing and give a sense of festive cheer, and we always try to include something active to get them up from their desks.

“School is more than just classroom learning; it’s also about building character, fostering a feeling of fellowship, and thinking of others. We want them to do have fun together as a school community and enjoy celebrating together.

“After how difficult the last couple of years have been with the pandemic, this is all more important than ever now children are back at school.”

Senior school P.E. students also pitched in to help with the Santa Dash, accompanying younger children and making sure they completed the run safely.

Pupils donated £1 each to wear their jumpers and take part in the run. The school expects to raise more than £400, which will be donated to Save the Children.
