AS part of a drunk and drug drive campaign Durham Police have arrested 11 people so far this month.

In a statement the police force said: "'What a waste of time and money, have you caught all the real criminals?'

"Despite comments like this, people who drive under the influence of drink or drugs are committing a crime and putting lives at risk.

"In amongst the 'real' criminals stopped as part of our drink and drug drive campaign so far this month was a drink driver who we discovered also had no licence or insurance."

Police revealed further checks showed he is also a registered sex offender who has been wanted by another force and Border Force officials for seven years.

He is now in custody and being dealt with.

Durham Police added: "All from one roadside stop.

"He is one of 11 people arrested so far – another 733 lawful drivers across County Durham and Darlington have taken part and passed with flying colours.

"Believe us, our officers don’t carry out checks to waste your time. Their main aim is to keep you and other road users safe – whether that be from a driver under the influence or a wanted sex offender.

"Thank you to everyone who has helped us keep you safe so far, we appreciate you!

"To all the other 'real criminals' – we won’t stop."
