A HEADTEACHER who closed his school after a bin wagon got stuck on a snowy road and block the entrance has said it will be open tomorrow.

The Durham County Council refuse wagon could not make it up the icy path from Elemore Hall School, in High Pittington, near Durham, on Thursday morning after a car slid and crashed in treacherous conditions.

Richard Royle, who leads the special school, said most pupils come by taxi and were not be able get in.

Mr Royle said: “It is very frustrating. We don’t ever like to close, but we are in a remote location and we do get hit by the weather quite badly.

“We have got almost a mile of private driveway, which single carriageway and treacherous. We have to be really careful. It is all clear now, but it was so far down the path we could not get a gritter down here. We have had to do it all by hand.”

James Lee, Durham County Council’s waste operations manager, said: “All priority routes in County Durham were gritted from 3am this morning and again, later this morning, following snowfall.

“We can confirm that there was an incident as one of bin wagons was leaving the Elemore Hall School site this morning, temporarily blocking access to the driveway. However, this was cleared within an hour of the incident.”
