AN Indian restaurant has been named best in the North East - but it isn't actually in the North East, prompting the confusion and outrage that you might expect.

Bradford's Mumtaz Indian has just been named the best in the region in a prestigious awards ceremony which sees hundreds vying to win the title.

According to The Northern Echo's sister paper, the Bradford Telegraph & Argus the restaurant won the North East category of what's deemed as the "curry Oscars."

Sponsored by Just Eat, the UK's finest curry restaurateurs and a flurry of MPs as well as showbiz personalities gathered to see who the winners would be on Monday.

The Northern Echo:

But it seems organisers choosing to lump Yorkshire in with the North East struck a chord with patriotic residents, both in this region and West Yorkshire.

On social media, the award organisers were reminded of the geography of the North East and where Bradford sits, some 80 miles away from the Teesside boundary.

Andrew Oyston tweeted: "For some reason, the British Curry Awards believe Bradford is in the North East of England."

The tweet of confusion continued: "As big of a surprise to the North East as it is to the people of West Yorkshire."

Meanwhile, others were quick to mock the region's curry houses for seemingly missing out on their own awards.

However, the British Curry Awards website explains that the awards are broken into eight regions with Yorkshire part of the North East.

But that's despite London being split into two categories, London Central & City and London - Outer and Suburbs.

The Northern Echo approached the British Curry Awards for comment.
