He was taken to James Cook University Hospital, where he remains in a “critical but stable” condition while receiving treatment.

Police have issued a fresh appeal today.

Detectives are investigating the circumstances of how the man came about his injuries and have narrowed down an area where they are now concentrating their enquiries.

The man, who was wearing light coloured tracksuit bottoms, is believed to have been in the area of Southfield Road and Abingdon Road between the hours of 11.15pm and 11.40pm on Sunday evening.

Police are appealing to anyone walking or driving along those two roads on Sunday evening between 11.15pm and 11.40pm who may have seen a man wearing light coloured tracksuit bottoms.

Anyone who may have private CCTV or dash cam footage from those areas on Sunday evening is urged to check them for footage of the man or anything which could assist the ongoing investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Cleveland Police on the non-emergency number 101, quoting incident number 203083.
