Judge Howard Crowson sentenced Jackson to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 15 years and 166 days.

Speaking after the sentencing, Senior Investigating Officer, Temporary Detective Chief Inspector Peter Carr, said: “Adam Jackson was in parental charge of Grace Thorpe when he attacked her, causing her significant harm. Instead of looking after and caring for her he assaulted her, causing her fatal injuries.

"When professionals questioned how Grace had sustained her injuries, Jackson lied.

“He then delayed seeking medical help and tried to conceal his actions, even offering Grace chocolate buttons to try to appease her. He continued to lie to Grace’s family and to police to try to cover up what he had done.

“Today’s guilty plea spares Grace’s family the pain of a lengthy trial but it does not take anything away from the fact that Adam Jackson caused the death of a young toddler who had her whole life ahead of her. Grace’s family will live with that loss every day.

“The evidence against him is overwhelming and there is no defence for the crimes he has committed. Adam Jackson will now spend many years behind bars.”
