A NUMBER of schools have been forced to shut today due to the effects of Storm Arwen.

Many properties across the region were damaged when the storm hit overnight on Friday, bringing winds up to 100mph, snow and sleet.

Electricity network operator Northern Powergrid reported the most extensive storm damage to its network in 15 years, which left 240,000 customers without power.

Whilst the vast majority of power cuts have been resolved, some premises are still without electricity including some schools.

In County Durham, the following schools are shut today, and expect to reopen on Tuesday morning:

  • Butterknowle Primary School
  • Hamsterley Primary School
  • Middleton-in-Teesdale Primary School
  • Ramshaw Primary School
  • Rookhope Primary School
  • St John's Chapel Primary School
  • Stanley (Crook) Primary School, where damage has also been caused to the site
  • Wearhead Primary School Woodland Primary School, where storm damage has made the building unsafe to use. Staff hope temporary repairs will be carried out today so it is safe to reopen on Tuesday.

In Stockton, All Saints Church of England Academy is closed to students in Years 9 and 10 today due to storm damage to the building. Classes for those year groups will be taught via remote teaching - students should register with their tutors online at 9.50am and then attend lessons remotely from Lesson 2 onwards (10.10am).

The school will be open for Years 7, 8 and 11 but these year groups will start at the later time of 9.50am.

The school hopes to return to normal from Tuesday, November 30.

We will bring you any other school closures which are reported, but in the meantime check the website of your local education authority for the latest on potential school closures.
