POLICE officers in Sedgefield have proved that kindness can be found in the most unlikely places after being the recipient of a “selfless gesture” at the scene of a four-car road collision earlier this week.

After doing a routine patrol on Wednesday morning – officers from Sedgefield were deployed to the scene of a serious accident on the A689 involving four vehicles.

Arriving on the scene, the police unit quickly established who had been injured in the incident and helped paramedics that were also in attendance.

Despite keeping the road closed for over two hours to monitor the casualties and clear the debris, the most surprising element of the crash was yet to come.

A member of the public who had witnessed police and other emergency teams clear the road stopped at the roadside to hand over a pack of biscuits and hot drinks.

Following the “incredible act of generosity” of the unknown hero, the act has since been hailed by Durham Constabulary, who issued a ‘thank you appeal’ over social media.

Taking to Twitter yesterday, the police force said: “Officers from Sedgefield neighbourhood team were deployed to the scene of a collision on the A689. The collision, which involved four vehicles, closed the road for around 2 hours.

“The team headed out the scene and quickly established who had received injuries. After informing paramedics they swiftly moved on to traffic management and ensured everyone passed safely.

“In amongst all of this, the team were surprised to find that a member of the public had stopped by to leave a packet of biscuits and some hot drinks.

“We'd like to say a massive thank you to them for looking after our officers and everyone else at the scene.”

While the random act of kindness struck a chord with the local police team, members of the public were also quick to praise the actions of the mystery individual, with one commenter saying: “this goes a long way – there is more good than bad in this world.”

Meanwhile, earlier this week, Darlington Police showed that kindness can go both ways after their CID team donated their tea fund to help buy advent calendars and chocolates for St Mary’s Church in Cockerton, which helps run Refuge, a charity that supports women and children from domestic violence.
