A BRAND new crazy golf attraction which promises to bring the weird and wonderful to the North East is set to make its debut today.

The hugely-anticipated, Junkyard Golf Club will swing into action later this afternoon after it became a sell-out success in other UK cities.

The Northern Echo had a first look inside the new venue - complete with cocktails, three bars and three wacky golf courses ahead of its opening.

Located on Newgate Street, the crazy golf attraction is the company's sixth venue - and first in the region - after opening in cities including Manchester, Leeds and London.

The Northern Echo:

With its array of nine-hole crazy golf courses, those meandering the neon lights, scrapyard items and cocktail bars, will have different three themes to choose from.

Featuring dark fairgrounds, what they describe are "circus freaks" and twisted clowns,  the Bozo course is themed and designed around a carnival.

The Pablo course features a huge jungle and is designed to take the customer on an excursion into polluted tropical madness.

Meanwhile, the Gary course features towers of tyres, written-off cars, and auto-junk in customers' very own scrapyard challenge.

Bosses have said the venue also features three new bars which will serve beers and "sweetly" nostalgic cocktails along with tuck-shop treats.

Sophie-Larissa Houghton of Junkyard Golf Club previously said: “Newcastle is a mega city with such a bold personality - it has such a buzz.

"We are honored and so excited to become part of the scene with our first site in the North East.

"We are in the process of planning our best ever junkyard launch party in the city with a local company and plan to land with a massive bang. It’s what Junkyard is all about."

One of the founders of Junkyard Golf Club, Matthew Lake explained what the difference was at his venues compared to competitors.

He said: "Junkyard Golf Club was born following a night of Pina Coladas.

"During trips away to Miami and Berlin, we experienced a whole new type of crazy golf, like nothing we’d seen in the UK.

"From gigantic, over the top courses that spanned beaches, to courses pumping techno music in UV lit basement bars, we were hyped by the concept and decided to take the gamble by opening Junkyard Golf Club in UK."

More than £1m has been spent on turning the site into another Junkyard Golf Club, which bosses say has resulted in the creation of 100 jobs.

Last month, bosses anticipated the Newcastle venue would be a sell-out success as its first wave of tickets went online.

On social media, eager customers reported their excitement after appearing to secure a ticket in time for its opening week.

The venue officially opens at 4pm today and will open seven days a week.
