POLICE have issued the identify of a 91-year-old who died after being hit by a car in Gateshead in what officers are calling a “tragic incident.”

Emergency services attended but the pedestrian, named by Police as Leslie Robson, 91, from Gateshead, was confirmed dead at the scene.

The force has said that his family are continuing to be supported by specialist officers and have requested that their privacy is respected during this time.

The driver of the car involved stopped at the scene and assisted officers with enquiries.

Sergeant Dave Roberts, of Northumbria Police, said: “My thoughts are with Leslie’s family after this tragic incident and we are committed to finding out what happened immediately before the collision.

“An investigation into the circumstances are ongoing, and I would like to thank those who have already come forward with information.

“I am especially keen on tracing a witness to assist our enquiries. A grey or silver Vauxhall Zafira was driving west along Main Street at the time of the collision and may have seen what happened.

“That person could have crucial information that can help give Leslie’s family the answers they deserve, and I’d ask that they come forward as soon as possible.”
