ALMOST 100 neighbourhoods across the region continue to see Covid rates on the up - as one area saw 70 new infections in the past week.

A total of 97 postcode areas across the North East and North Yorkshire have seen an upwards trend in infections - around a quarter of the region.

It comes as one North East area saw the country's highest infection rate last week, prompting renewed calls to follow guidelines and go for their vaccine.

Latest figures show how the number of postcodes across the region have actually decreased in the past week, with 67 fewer areas seeing cases on the rise.

The Northern Echo:

People have been urged to get the Covid jab

Areas including Redcar East, Yarm (Stockton), Thirsk South (Hambleton) and Cockerton (Darlington) have seen among the highest number of new cases in the past week.

'Everyone still has a part to play'

Last week as it emerged North Tyneside had seen the country's highest infection rates, Wendy Burke, North Tyneside’s Director of Public Health, urged everyone to remain vigilant.

She said: “While the current rates of infection in North Tyneside are high, the rate has steadily declined over the last two weeks.

“Everyone still has a part to play in helping to contain the spread of the virus within our communities.

"We continue to advise those who live, work, and visit in North Tyneside to follow Government guidance and wear a face covering in crowded and enclosed spaces, and to maintain excellent hand and respiratory hygiene."

Yesterday, the Prime Minister Boris Johnson spoke of various degress of new restrictions in countries across central Europe.

Despite being unsure of how much of a threat this was to the UK, the PM warned "we cannot afford to be complacent".

He said cases have increased in the UK and urged everyone to get the vaccine to control the pandemic as he said countries with lower vaccination rates have seen a rise in cases.
