A NORTH-EAST school has been awarded a positive report across the board by Government inspectors who have highlighted its focus on developing pupils’ character and personal qualities.

Polam Hall School, in Darlington, has been given an Ofsted rating of “good” in all categories: quality of education; behaviour and attitudes; personal development; leadership and management; and early years provision.

Following the previous Ofsted inspection, in 2018, the school was assessed as “requiring improvement”.

However, inspectors say the appointment of Kate Reid as principal – well supported by other school leaders and the Woodard Academies Trust – has led to “much improvement”.

Mrs Reid, who took over as principal in September 2017, shortly before the previous Ofsted inspection, praised the team spirit shown by pupils, parents, and staff.

“Everyone has played a part in bringing about this improvement and I’m extremely proud of what has been achieved, especially during the challenges of the pandemic,” she said.

“What’s really nice is that the report recognises the ethos of the school as being part of the community, and the emphasis placed on developing the character of the pupils.”

The report says: “The school’s ‘Concordia Crescimus’ curriculum aims to support pupils’ personal development. This is a strength of the school. It helps prepare pupils to contribute to society and develop citizenship qualities.”

It adds: “Pupils behave well in lessons and at social times. Their conduct around the school is exemplary. There is a calm, positive learning atmosphere around the school.”

Bullying is treated seriously and there is a “determined approach” to encouraging high levels of attendance.

Teachers are praised for successfully tailoring the well-planned curriculum to meet pupils’ needs, and the inspectors have highlighted the opportunities provided by an extensive range of clubs.

Polam Hall was an independent school until September 2015 when it became a free school, and it became part of the Woodard Academies Trust two years later. There are now around 750 pupils at the school.

Mrs Reid described the latest Ofsted report as “an important step forward” but said there was no room for complacency and that there was a determination to bring about further improvements.

“This is not the end of the journey for us. Our ambition is for Polam Hall to become an outstanding place for education,” she said.
