A NORTH EAST council's website was down earlier today leaving residents unable to access services online.

Residents reported they had been unable to access Durham County Council's website for a number of hours on Wednesday morning.

Users reported a warning saying the "site can’t be reached" when viewing on mobile and desktop devices.

It came as another North East council reported widespread outages at the beginning of last year after a cyber-attack took its website offline.

Redcar and Cleveland Council’s website had been offline for over a week prompting a criminal investigation from the The National Crime Agency.

But confirming that the issues had now been resolved as of Wednesday lunchtime, Victoria Murray, Durham County Council’s head of digital and customer services, said: “We can confirm that some residents experienced intermittent issues when trying to access our website this morning.

“We would like to apologise to anyone who was affected by this temporary issue but can confirm it has now been resolved and that it was not related to any security vulnerabilities.”
