THE opening of the very first Jollibee in the North East got off to a roaring success as hundreds queued - with some arriving as early as 5.30am.

Huge queues were spotted outside the new restaurant on Northumberland Street in Newcastle City Centre after officially opening at 10am on Thursday.

The restaurant, which is huge in the Philippines, saw similar scenes when it first debuted in Liverpool last year and London the year before.

The chain, which eyed up Newcastle based on its huge nightlife and student base, said its first excited customers started arriving at around 5.30am.

That came after huge excitement on social media in the days leading up to today's launch, with some joking that they will not need to return to the Phillipines again.

Adam Parkinson, Business Head of Jollibee Europe, officially cut the ribbon in the opening ceremony alongside the Newcastle store team and Jollibee's iconic bee mascot.

He said: “It is very encouraging to see the continued support we have received across the UK for each of our store openings.

"Newcastle is such an important move for us, particularly because it is such a pivotal cultural destination with a love for multicultural cuisines, a bustling night-life and a huge student base.

"If you still haven’t tried Jollibee, this is the chance to try the crispiest fried chicken and the best chicken burgers in town.”

What you can expect from the menu

According to Jollibee, the menu features fast-food classics such as their signature crispy fried “Chickenjoy", “Jolly Spaghetti”, made with a sweet-style sauce, loaded with cheese and hot dog slices.

Hand-breaded in store, the brand’s take on fried chicken will be served with a range of dipping sauces including Asian Ginger Chilli Sauce and Sriracha Mayonnaise.

Jollibee has also said it has launched a range of new menu items which will be available at the Newcastle restaurant including the Spicy Chicken Burger, Sriracha Chicken Loaded Fries and the Chicken Wrap.

The Newcastle Jollibee is open 10am-10pm every day
