STEAM lovers had the chance to see one of the region's engines as it hauled a series of trains across the country.

The Peppercorn A1 Pacific class 60163 Tornado steam locomotive and the Flying Scotsman were hauling a series of trains over the Settle and Carlisle Railway today.

The Tornado was pictured going over the viaduct at Yarm on its journey from Middlesbrough to Carlisle.

Tornado was constructed in the Hopetown Lane Works in Darlington.

It made its debut in 2008 and has since proved a hit, even making the big screen featuring on the BBC's Top Gear programme and the Paddington 2 film.

Painted in BR Green, it is the only loco of its kind to have reached the impressive speed of 100mph in the last five decades.

The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, which runs the Tornado, has launched an appeal for supporters to help cover the costs of an intermediate overhaul of the thirteen-year-old engine.

Launched last month, they are trying to raise £50,000 to supplement some capital already set aside for the work.
