INVESTIGATIONS are still underway to find out why thousands of crabs have washed up dead on beaches in the North East.

Beach-goers in on Teesside raised concerns with the Environment Agency about the number of dead crabs washing up on the shores.

The Environment Agency has been investigating the cause of the deaths.

This follows on from a number of Razorbill birds being found dead on beaches from Scotland to the Humber.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said: “Samples of water, sediment, mussel and crab have been collected and are being sent to our labs for analysis, to consider whether a pollution incident could have contributed to the deaths of the animals. We have also shared samples with CEFAS labs for disease analysis."
