A NORTH East amateur boxer is celebrating his first title belt which he has dedicated to the gym where he trains.

Amateur boxer Kalim Stuart claimed his first title belt – an achievement of equal significance to West Auckland Amateur Boxing Gym, where he trains.

It marks the gym’s first taste of success since it was launched as a community facility just over 16 months ago by local entrepreneur Stephen Nicholson and head coach Ernest Spowart.

Mr Stuart lifted the 57 kilo Tyne Tees Wear Development Belt after defeating Wearmouth Boxing Club’s Lee Rooney during a recent event at The Point, Sunderland.

The 22-year-old, from Bishop Auckland, was overjoyed and dedicated his points victory to West Auckland Amateur Boxing Gym.

Mr Stuart said: “It was a closely fought contest but fortunately for me I dug in and nicked it on points.

"I’m really pleased, not just for myself, but for everyone connected with the gym and I dedicate this win to them.

“I’ve been training hard, but couldn’t have done it without the coaches and facilities.”
