AFTER over 1,000 days in the care of Dogs Trust, four-year-old Greyhound Rowland, has landed on all three paws finding his forever home.

From first visiting the Darlington facility as a stray at just six-months-old, it was apparent that he was suffering from an injury.

Investigations and x-rays showed a fracture in the left hind leg which needed the bones to be re-aligned using external fixators.

He had metal plates fixed to the outside of the leg making them visible which made for quite an unusual sight. Rowland had plenty of respite care in a foster home until a permanent pet free residence could be found.

He then retuned to the Dogs Trust centre to continue his recovery. But discussions within the veterinary team decided the best option would be to remove the leg, earning him the nickname of ‘tripod dog’.

Due to Rowlands strict recovery regime, he missed opportunities for learning experiences of how to be around other dogs.

Rowland became popular in the local community due to his disability, with an outpouring of emotion for him.

The training team were working hard to support Rowland in some social doggy etiquette. Despite taking time, Rowland mastered the class of ‘making friends’.

A short while after, Sara and Tim, were browsing the website and saw Rowland. Sara said: “I was looking at the website as I sometimes do.

"I had no intention of rehoming another dog at the time as we already have three.

"I saw Rowland and just thought I will just watch the video and that was it, firstly he has three legs, secondly he had a happy face with kind eyes and the main factor was, how can such a beautiful dog have lived in the dogs' homes for the majority of his life.

"It broke my heart, I had to have him.”

After multiple successful introductions a going home date was set in place, just after he celebrated his fourth birthday.
