AN initiative to make Darlington a dementia friendly town has been launched.

Community service Dementia Friendly Darlington hosted a day of events as part of the national Raise Your Game scheme and now hope to create a regular event in the town.

Organiser Stephen Morgan revealed his desire to host a weekly session to combat loneliness and dementia in the town and wider local community.

"We're looking at what things businesses and the wider community can do to make the place more welcoming for people with dementia," he said.

Darlington Gaming Club, Dementia Friendly Darlington and Dementia UK worked together with NQA foodbank in Northgate to put on the event.

And after the successful weekend, Stephen has now revealed his ambition to make them a regular occurrence.

He said: "We want to do a weekly session to combat loneliness and dementia and spread awareness. Every Sunday there would be a facility for people to come down and create a nice environment."
