JUST one area in the region saw a fall in the number of new coronavirus infections last week, latest figures have now revealed.

Thousands of new cases were reported in the North East and North Yorkshire in the week leading to October 9, compared to figures from the week before.

It comes as health bosses are continuing to urge people to get the jab as there was this week comments that the NHS could be the busiest it has ever been, this winter.

Figures show that County Durham continues to see the highest number of cases with just over 2,000 reported, up by around 14 percent from the previous week.

Meanwhile, Northumberland and North Tyneside saw around 2,500 cases reported last week between them.

But the figures, which were published by Public Health England last night, have revealed one area has actually seen a decline in number of new cases.

Hambleton in North Yorkshire, which covers major towns such as Northallerton, Thirsk and Bedale, saw the rate of infection fall after seeing 104 fewer cases.

Figures showed that cases had dropped, with 333.9 cases per 100,000 people reported - down by around 25.3 percent from the previous week.

On Wednesday, the deputy chief executive of NHS Providers, Saffron Cordery, highlighted concerns over the pressures facing the NHS in coming months.

It followed a national survey, which found one in three doctors asked said they did not believe their NHS organisation is ready for the challenges of winter.

A poll for the Royal College of Physicians found medics also felt personally unprepared to deal with upcoming pressures, with many suffering exhaustion and feeling demoralised.

The NHS has been bracing itself for what could be a difficult winter due to the combination of Covid and seasonal flu.

Ms Cordery said: "This new survey reinforces our concerns about pressures facing the NHS this winter.

“NHS frontline staff continue to work incredibly hard and trust leaders pay tribute to their commitment and dedication.

“This winter the NHS could be the busiest it’s ever been. It is vital national bodies work with NHS leaders to get the planning for winter pressures right to help manage the risk ahead.”
