DEMOLITION work has taken place at the former steelworks site in Redcar.

Work is taking place to clear the 4,500 acre Teesworks site to make way for future developments.

On Saturday, two explosions took place at 2pm, within about five to ten seconds of each other.

The demolished structures are at the former raw material handling facility.

The Flux Bunker and adjoining junction house were brought down first.

A Teesworks spokesman said: “All of the work is confined to the site. We would like to reassure residents that, if they hear a loud noise coming from Teesworks at this time, this is planned and controlled activity.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused however it is necessary to carry out these works at a weekend to ensure there is minimum disruption to other development in progress across the site.

“We thank those that are affected in advance for their understanding.”

He added the programme of work was being accelerated to speed up the pace at which land would be ready for redevelopment.
