A POPULAR 'Umbrella Street' in Durham has raised more than £3,000 for a cancer trust.
The umbrella installation in Prince Bishops Place, in Durham, has this year supported Team Solan Connor Fawcett Family Cancer Trust.
Customers were encouraged to purchase a wooden tag supplied by retailer, Elvet and Bailey, for a £5 minimum donation.
The wooden tags were personalised in memory of someone special or to show appreciation for a friend or family member. The tags were then attached to one of the 353 umbrellas suspended at Prince Bishops Place, which created a dramatic display.
Prince Bishops Place aimed to raise over £1,500, so were thrilled to more than double that through this fantastic initiative.
All proceeds raised have been donated to Team Solan Family Cancer Trust, a charity created to help improve the quality of life of those affected by cancer in County Durham. Based in Spennymoor, they provide help and advice for people who need to escape from the turmoil that cancer can bring.
The charity can also help with small grants to help purchase equipment, attend a hairdressing appointment or to enjoy a well needed break or day out.
As well as receiving a keepsake tag, customers also have the chance to collect their personalised tag, once the display comes down in mid-October.
Centre manager of Prince Bishops Place, Richard Toynbee said: “We’re delighted to have raised over £3,000 for Team Solan Family Cancer Trust. It was lovely that so many customers supported the charity and for them to receive a keepsake to remember their loved ones in return."
CEO of Team Solan Family Cancer Trust, Mark Solan said: “We were honoured to have been picked to be the chosen charity for Umbrella Street. We are overwhelmed with the support we have received from Prince Bishops Place, Elvet and Bailey and all those who purchased a raindrop to hang from the umbrellas."
"We look forward to continuing to develop partnership working with both organisations and thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for their contributions and support.”
Owner of Elvet and Bailey, Mark Taylor says; “It’s been an honour to be part of this and we’ve loved that customers have embraced the idea so well, sharing their stories behind the tags they’re ordering and donating so generously. To think that we’ve been required to make over 300 tags, selling out the entire installation and raising over £3000 is incredible.”
