A MAN has appeared in court charged with the murder of a cyclist who was hit by a car.

Brandon Ali is accused of murder and wounding with intent in relation to an incident in the Homerton Road and Gribdale Road area of Middlesbrough, on Saturday, August 21.

The 20-year-old was the passenger in the car that allegedly hit Carl Eland and a another woman, Teesside Crown Court heard.

Mr Eland died five days later and the suffered minor injuries after they were struck by a white Vauxhall Insignia.

Ali, of Dalwood Court, Hemlington, Middlesbrough, made a brief appearance at the court via videolink before being remanded in custody.

The defendant was not asked to enter a plea during the hearing.

A trial date has been provisionally set for February 28 next year.

Ali will appear at court next month for a plea and trial preparation hearing.
