A MAN who allegedly threatened travel agency staff with an axe during a terrifying armed robbery this morning has been arrested.

Hays Travel, on Front Street, in Stanley was raided just after 10.40am today, sparking a major police response to catch the axeman.

It is understood he threatened staff working in the shop before escaping with money.

Witnesses told of a huge police presence in the town and a police helicopter was scrambled as officers scoured the area for the man.

A man who works at a nearby premises said: “Apparently someone ran into Hays with an axe and ran out with a bag.

“There have been police all over the place ever since, some of them look like firearms officers in helmets and balaclavas.”

Police have confirmed a suspect has been arrested and is being questioned by detectives.

A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said: “None of the staff are thought to have been injured during the incident.

“This afternoon, a man was arrested in connection with the incident. He is currently in police custody and the investigation remains ongoing.”
