TEESSIDE Airport has confirmed it will reopen tomorrow (Monday) after it closed yesterday morning following a small plane crashed.

A pilot and two passengers were taken to hospital following the incident involving a light aircraft on Saturday morning at 9.39am.

It is believed the plane's engine failed causing it to crash shortly after it had taken off.

A spokesperson for Teesside Airport yesterday said: “Following an incident involving a light aircraft yesterday morning we can now confirm the Aircraft Accident Investigation Branch have concluded their work at the site and the aircraft has now been removed from the area.

"The airport will reopen tomorrow (Monday) morning to resume normal operations.

“It has been a difficult weekend for everyone involved in the incident. We would like to thank our amazing customers who have been so understanding while the airport has remained closed. 

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the three people on board the aircraft at the time who remain in hospital.”

One person was airlifted to hospital with 'serious injuries', while two others were taken to hospital by road.

Police, the fire service, the ambulance service and the air ambulance all attended the scene.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing an "almighty bang".

One person said: "Heard the engine cut out and then heard an almighty bang. Many emergency service and air ambulance on scene. Hope all involved are ok."
