A POLICE investigation is underway after bogus workmen took payment from County Durham residents to remove rubbish - then left without doing the work.

Durham constabulary said that householders in the town of Stanley have contacted police to complain about losing money to the cold callers.

A spokesperson for Stanley neighbourhood police team said: "Numerous residents in the South Moor and wider Stanley area have reported cold callers offering to remove rubbish and other unwanted items at a cost.

"Money is being taken and services are not being carried out.

"These incidents are being looked into."

Officers urged people to be cautious with cold callers even if they are dressed to look legitimate, such as in hi-vis jackets.

The spokesperson added: "Please do not engage with cold callers offering such services in the area and do not pay up front in cash or bank transfer.

"Callers may be in hi-vis and look legitimate.

"If you do need rubbish removed please engage with a reputable company."
