A YOUNG girl was almost hit by a quad bike in Newton Aycliffe last week.

Response officers from Durham Constabulary attended the scene of the incident, after it was reported that the vehicle had been ridden very close to the child and almost collided with her.

After ensuring children at the scene were okay, officers organised a trauma teddy to be given to the girl to help her feel better and safe.

The incident was one of a number of antisocial behaviour calls that the Newton Aycliffe neighbourhood police team responded to last week, which saw officers step up patrols in trouble hotspots including the town centre, Western area and Neville Parade – where they were joined by local councillors to engage with young people and encourage them to behave responsibly.

At the weekend, two youths were caught after they set fire to a tree near the play area on Greenfield Way.

Officers spoke to them about fire safety and criminal damage.
