A North East MP has been appointed to a new position in Parliament.

Darlington's MP Peter Gibson, has been appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Department of International Trade (DIT).

It comes after the department announced it will join three other Government departments in relocating its services to Darlington.

A Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) is appointed by a Minister to be their assistant, and is selected from a group of backbench MPs as the 'eyes and ears' of the minister in the House of Commons.

Mr Gibson said: "I am excited and really looking forward to my new role in Parliament helping to support the efforts to grow our global trade around the world."

The DIT aims to relocate around 500 staff who will be based in the Darlington Treasury North Campus.
