FIVE hikers will share their favourite walks in the region on a BBC television series this week.

Take A Hike began on BBC Two last week, featuring some of the best walks Devon has to offer, and this week it’s the turn of Northumberland.

The show sees people from all walks of life go head-to-head to discover the best walks the UK has to offer.

The second week in the series, airing from tonight until Friday on BBC Two at 6.30pm, will feature hikers from Hartlepool, Newcastle, Longhirst, Cramlington and Alnwick.

Across this week they will each take viewers to stunning Northumberland – famous for its breath-taking beaches, crumbling castles, and craggy crags.

The Northern Echo:

Taking it in turns to lead the walk, the walkers will rate the quality of the route, picnic, views and entertainment out of ten and the top scorer wins the coveted ‘Golden Walking Stick’.

The group strolls across the coastlines of Alnwick and Whitley Bay, treks through Kielder Forest and Harbottle, and hikes to new heights at Hadrian’s Wall.

Comedian Stephanie Aird, from Hartlepool, is something of an internet sensation with more than 500,000 social media followers and well over 20 million video views as well as performing at sell-out tours and staring on ITV’s Judge Rinder.

The Northern Echo:

Tonight, despite suffering from vertigo, she’s going to be taking the group on a hike to one of Northumberland’s highest spots.

She hopes her 5km route to the county’s most famous landmark, Hadrian’s Wall, will scoop her the top prize and she has a host of historical-themed activities and a “mucky mixture buffet” planned to pull in the points.

Stephanie, 52, said: “I had the best week ever filming with some amazing people. I really can’t wait for you all to see my episode oh and to see my mucky mixture buffet.”

The final week of walks will take place in Scotland from Monday, September 27.
