A NORTH East MP has received a promotion in Boris Johnson’s latest cabinet reshuffle.

Simon Clarke MP for Middlesbrough South and Cleveland East has been promoted to Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

Mr Clarke had previously been serving, he had been Minister of State for Regional Growth and Local Government from February 2020 until September 2020, before resigning for personal reasons.

Mr Clarke has previous experience in a treasury role serving as Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury from July 2019 to February 2020.

He is now the second North East MP to get a promotion in this reshuffle, the other being Berwick MP Anne-marie Trevelyan.

It is hoped that his promotion will help the Treasury as it moves to the Darlington campus which is close to Mr Clarke’s constituency.
