Here's what the Northern Echo understands so far about the fire that broke out this afternoon at a construction site in Durham.

The fire broke out at the new Milburngate developments near the riverside.

Here's what we know so far:

- Fire reported at around 2pm on Milburngate - the site of former Passport Office.

- Fire took hold of the construction site, operated by Tolent.

- The fire started in a cavity wall insulation. 

- Roads became gridlocked in and out of Durham City as people were told to stay away and police closed the roads nearest the site.

- Fire service confirms one person was treated for smoke inhalation, no other injuries yet.

- Fire appears to be largely extinguished.

- Rumours circulated that the fire was caused by an explosion but witnesses didn't report hearing any explosions. 

- Fireteams from Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue service as well as Cleveland Fire Brigade were on the scene.

- Traffic on the Framwelgate Waterside road completely stuck as fire crews close the road.

- Hotel chain Radisson which owns a hotel next door to the site ordered all windows to be shut and the leisure facility to be closed.

- Durham Police confirm that some roads will remain closed for the night: The eastbound carriageway of the A690 bridge, as does Framwellgate Peth.

-These routes will remain closed overnight and into rush hour tomorrow morning.
