ACCORDING to a recent study one Northumberland, two North Yorkshire spots have been named in the top ten hidden gems in the UK’s national parks.

The study, called the National Park: Hidden Gems study carried out by Miller Homes, analysed more than 2,200,000 Instagram location tags in the ten national parks.

It then took the places which had a low number of tags on Instagram and compared this with the number of five-star reviews on TripAdvisor and Google Reviews, to reveal the top secret beauty spots in the UK.

The top spot was taken by Uath Lochan Lake in Cairngorms National Park with just 375 instagram posts, 144 reviews, but a 86.81 per cent five-star rating.

Third on the list is Gaping Gill in the Yorkshire Dales, which is the largest underground natural cave chamber in Britain.

Gaping Gill received just 1,164 Instagram location tags and 266 reviews, but an average number of five-star reviews of 84.21 per cent.

Eighth on the list came Ravenscar in the North York Moors, which had just 544 location tags, 411 reviews but an average number of five-star reviews at 78.10 per cent.

Spots such as Lake Windermere in the Lake District scored had 188,000 location tags, showing just how popular they are.

Debbie Whittingham, regional sales director at Miller Homes Yorkshire, said: “Most tourists tag the locations they go to visit on Instagram, and while these spots in our Hidden Gems index have thousands of fewer posts than many popular areas, they all have exceptional ratings.

“This shows that when people do visit them, they have a fantastic time in an area which looks like it’s straight out of a painting and not quite so busy!”

  7. Denny Wood, New Forest
  8. Ravenscar, North York Moors
  9. Stackpole Quay, Pembrokeshire
  10. Grimspound, Dartmoor
