A MAN is in hospital with serious inuries after being stabbed in the early hours of this morning.

Shortly before 4am today, emergency services were called to an incident in the Spencer Street area of North Shields.

Police officers and an ambulance crew found a 35-year-old man with injuries consistent with a stabbing.

He was taken to hospital where he remains with serious injuries.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "An investigation has been launched into the incident and we are now appealing for witnesses to the disturbance.

"We also want to hear from anyone who was passing through the area at the time to check their dashcam footage.

"We are determined to find out the circumstances surrounding the assault and ultimately ensure anyone responsible is brought to justice.

"We are now asking anyone who was walking in the area or passing in a vehicle between the hours of 2.30am to 4am to get in touch if they can assist in any way.

"Your information, no matter how insignificant you feel it may be, could prove the crucial link in our ongoing investigation."

Officers remain in the area to carry out enquiries and offer any reassurance to residents.
