POLICE have recovered a caravan which was stolen the day before its owners were due to use it to go on holiday.

Durham police received a report that a touring caravan was stolen from Darlington on Monday, and the Virtual Investigation Team worked to identify a tracker on it, which pinged to a caravan site near Newton Aycliffe.

Officers from the Durham and Cleveland roads policing unit and dog section were dispatched to the site, where they located the caravan.

They were supported by officers from the National Police Air Service which provided a helicopter for the search operation.

Two people, a 39-year-old man and 36-year-old woman, were arrested in connection with the incident and were taken into police custody.

"Think you can steal a four-berth caravan and get away with it? Think again," said a police spokesperson.

"The caravan will now be returned to its rightful owners."
