RESIDENTS and visitors of Darlington can look forward to a host of free events set to descend on the town.

Thousands of people enjoyed a range of free events during August with free active events in the Market Square including a roller-skating rink, crazy bikes, mini golf, climbing wall and go-karts.

Music fans flocked to the Pride Weekender and Mish Mash Festival, and the month ended on a high note with a swarm of “insects” and the Food and Drink Festival which coincided with the opening of the new-look food hall in the indoor market.

Local and regional crafts people will be showcasing their skills on Saturday, September 4, in the Market Square from 10am-4pm. Woodturners, ceramic artists and other heritage crafts will be on show, as well as free crafts for children.

The following week sees the welcome return of the ever-popular Darlington Rhythm and Blues Festival set to celebrate a belated 25th anniversary.

The Northern Echo:

From Friday, September 10 until Sunday 12, R ‘n’ B fans can enjoy music in venues throughout the town culminating in the main stage on Sunday in the Market Square and stage on the Riverside.

Headliners in the market square will include Gerry Jablonski and the Electric Band and the Redfish Blues Band will be performing on the riverside.

Local artists will be showcasing their skills across the town centre and in a special marquee exhibition in the market square as Darlington Arts Festival gets underway from Friday, September 24, until Monday, September 27, 10am-4pm.

Space is filling up fast, so any artists who wish to exhibit should get in touch with the council as soon as possible.

Councillor Alan Marshall, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for economy and regeneration, said: “Our summer events brought thousands of people to Darlington and I am delighted that more events are planned for September.

"It has been heart-warming to see people return to our town centre and to some kind of normality, after what has been a difficult time for everyone – businesses, traders and residents.

“We’re delighted to be able to bring a range of exciting events to the town over the next few months and I urge everyone to come along and support."
