A DEVASTATED mother has paid tribute to her son after he tragically died following a fatal assault in South Shields.

In the early hours of Monday morning, Steven Thompson, 19, was assaulted outside Roxannes night club in Anderson Street.

The teen was found unconscious by officers who were called to the scene but despite the effort of officers, paramedics and medics, he sadly died hours later.

Steven, of South Shields, leaves behind his parents Elaine and Lawrence, brother David and countless friends.

He earned a reputation as a hard worker during his time at school and for his time spent working as a battery operator at Cell Park Solutions in South Shields.

Friends, colleagues and former teachers have all paid tribute to him this week.

But it is his family who will miss him most.

"We love him and will miss him"

Mother Elaine said: “Kind, funny and loved by everyone – that was Steven.

“We are an extremely close-knit family and this loss has truly devastated us, it’s not possible to put into words how much we love him and will miss him.”

An investigation was launched into the assault, and 22-year-old Leon Wildgoose, of Simonside Hall, South Shields, was arrested later that day.

On Tuesday he was charged with manslaughter.

Meanwhile, two further men, Dylan Ford, 23, of Alice Street, South Shields and Ian Hall, 40, of Revesby Street, South Shields, have been charged with affray.
