A BRAND new Caribbean eatery is set to open in Durham City later this year - and applications for around 50 jobs are live.

Bosses of the new Turtle Bay, which will open in the Riverwalk development, have said their recruitment drive has started ahead of its opening date.

The new two-storey restaurant and bar is expected to see the creation of around 50 jobs, once it opens its doors in October.

Earlier this month, Turtle Bay revealed how the new venue would look with reggae-themed rooms and impressive decor planned.

But revealing that it would now be holding two auditions for interested staff next week, it said there were jobs across several roles available.

'We’d love to meet local people'

Ryan Sullivan, general manager of Turtle Bay Durham, said: “The North East is known for being one of the friendliest and most welcoming regions in the UK and we’re excited to see who comes through the doors.

"We’d love to meet local people driven to launch a hospitality career with Turtle Bay and who have the personality and people skills to deliver high-quality service in a relaxed friendly environment.”

It said job roles include staff working in front of house teams, bar tenders working behind island bars and chefs to work in its open-kitchen and jerk pit.

What will happen at the auditions

Phil Dukelow, operations manager for Turtle Bay, explained what applicants can expect from the company's auditions process.

He said: “Turtle Bay restaurants celebrate soulful laid-back Caribbean culture, recreating the colourful vibe and energy of a beach shack social, which is why we do things differently when it comes to recruiting.

"We are holding audition days when people can come down and get into the spirit of the Caribbean with fun tasks, team building exercises, informal interviews and Dragon’s Den style pitches to our bar and kitchen managers.”

“Turtle Bay is an inclusive employer. We hire people from all walks of life, regardless of background or experience and provide great training that helps them thrive in a fun, friendly work environment."

How to apply and when the auditions will take place

The auditions will take place at the Radisson Blu Hotel Durham on Saturday, September 4 and Tuesday, September 7.
