RUNNERS took to the fells for a ten-mile romp to raise money in aid of a holiday retreat for parents bereaved by suicide.

Kieran Hughes, of Stanhope, County Durham, organised Saturday's Stanhope ten-miler in aid the Quinn's Retreat.

The retreat was set up by parents Tracey and David Beadle of Shildon, who lost both their children to suicide.

Quinn Beadle died aged 17 in 2018 and her 21-year-old brother, Dyllon, the following year.

Quinn's Retreat, a static caravan in Barnard Castle, offers a break for those who have been similarly bereaved.

Kieran said: "They found that getting away to somewhere noone knew them helped them come to terms with their tragedy .

"So they set up Quinn's Retreat, which they offer to anyone who has lost a child through suicide."

As well as being a retained firefighter at Stanhope, Kieran works for Hitachi, where David is a colleague.

He said: "After losing both children and then carrying to give back to other people is extraordinary. I thought what better charity to support."

A mixture of 120 walkers and runners took part in the run, which started and finished in the village and took in Softly Bank and Hill End. It raised over £3,000 for Quinn's Retreat.

Kieran said: “I just want to say a massive well done to everyone who was involved with the run today, fantastic effort by everyone.”

"I would like to give a special mention to Tom Coates and his girlfriend Beth McLean, who raised £570, the Shildon Running Club and all the volunteers and marshals who helped – as well as the Stanhope Show committee."
