THE majority of the region has reported an upward trend in the number of new Covid cases - as thousands were confirmed in the past week.

Latest figures show how 11 out of 14 areas in the North East and North Yorkshire have seen the number of new cases rise when compared to the week before.

It comes as the Covid vaccine programme has so far prevented more than 100,000 deaths, according to a report published last night.

Meanwhile, there have been renewed calls for health chiefs for everyone to come forward for their first and second doses of the Covid vaccine as cases remain "high."

Figures from Public Health England, published last night, show how cases are currently at the region's highest in County Durham, Northumberland and Sunderland.

However, Covid cases in Newcastle, Stockton and Redcar are seeing a decline in the number of infections, compared with the week before.

On Thursday, Public Health England said the Covid vaccine programme had averted between 102,500 and 109,500 deaths in total.

The Health Secretary Sajid Javid described the new data as “phenomenal” and said it was a “testament to the UK’s vaccination programme”.

Those comments were followed by continued calls to get the vaccine as cases of Covid remained "high" across the UK, with those in younger age groups among those affected.

Alicia Demirjian, incident director for Covid-19 at Public Health England, said: “Cases of Covid-19 are still high, especially among young people. If you have Covid-19 symptoms, please do not go out – stay at home and get a PCR test as soon as possible."
