A COUPLE better-known for their award-winning gins are opening their first restaurant this week.

Cathy and Karl Mason, the couple behind, Masons Yorkshire Gin, are opening Tom & Nellie’s restaurant in Bedale this Thursday.

The couple have sensitively refurbished the Grade II listed building over four months and named the restaurant Tom & Nellies, after Cathy's grandparents who lived there as vergers for St Gregory’s church for many years.

Karl said: “We are thrilled to be opening a restaurant that serves the people of Bedale and the surrounding area.

"We look forward to throwing open the doors this week and welcoming people to Tom & Nellie’s.”

Cathy added: ‘We couldn’t turn down the chance to do something with this fantastic building. After many happy family memories here, with my grandparents Tom & Nellie - what an honour to open a restaurant in their name.”

The head chef is the acclaimed Norman Mackenzie who has previously cooked at venues including The Feversham Arms and The Grand Hotel in York.

He said was "excited to be linking up with one of the finest producers North Yorkshire has, and the opportunity to build a local neighbourhood restaurant”.
