A HOUSEBUILDER has donated a selection of gardening and planting equipment to Durham care home in a bid to enhance residents’ outdoor activities during National Allotments Week.

David Wilson Homes donated the tools, gloves, watering cans and vegetable seeds to residents of Four Seasons Hallgarth Care Home on Hallgarth Road, close to its The Drive at Mount Oswald development.

With garden therapy said to have offered care home residents around the country a much needed sense of purpose while family visits and day trips were restricted, the housebuilder’s donation was made to encourage elderly residents in Durham to remain green fingered even as they begin to regain a sense of normality post-lockdown.

Sarah Hall, home administrator at Hallgarth Care Home, said: “The donation from David Wilson Homes was a really welcome one and gave a number of our residents the chance to enjoy the outdoors while planting some of their favourite vegetables.

"Now the seeds have been sown, we’ve no doubt there’ll be plenty of interest in the progress of our planters/allotment(s) over the weeks and months to come.”

As part of its ongoing support for the local community, Barratt Developments North East also runs its own Community Fund initiative, which sees the housebuilder make a £1,000 donation made to a different local charity each month.

Natalie Donnelly, sales manager at David Wilson Homes’ The Drive at Mount Oswald, added: “We recognise how spending time tending to our gardens can really boost wellbeing while giving people a greater sense of purpose during challenging times like the last 18 months, and National Allotments Week seemed like the perfect opportunity to encourage members of our local community to embrace their inner horticulturalist.

"We hope the tools can be put to good use over the remainder of the summer and beyond.”

David Wilson Homes’ The Drive at Mount Oswald development offers a range of luxury 4 and 5 bedroom homes, less than two miles from Durham city centre.
